Not everybody who enjoys The Lord of the Rings knows that J.R.R.Tolkien described it as “a deeplyTolkien religious and Catholic work.” This booklet draws out the Christian underpinnings of the story. Timed to coincide with the release of the third movie in 2003, but intriguing wherever Tolkien’s work is loved.

John Bowen

John Bowen was Professor of Evangelism and Director of the Institute of Evangelism at Wycliffe College from 1997 till 2013. Now retired, he is happily engaged in preaching, teaching, mentoring, and writing. His most recent books are God is Always Bigger: Reflections of a Hopeful Critic (2021) and The Unfolding Gospel: How the Good News Makes Sense of Discipleship, Church, Mission, and Everything Else (2021). He also writes a monthly column, “In Other Words,” in The Niagara Anglican. John is married to Deborah, an English professor. They have two adult children and four grandchildren.
